Confirmed mission: The Patriot Guard Riders have been invited to participate in the funeral and interment services for Mr. Jewel McClanahan. Mr. McClanahan served from 1944 to 1946 in the US Army Infantry (automatic rifleman).

He was drafted in 1944, did basic training at Camp Joseph E Robinson, then was sent to Camp Shelby. From there he was sent to Europe with the 69th Infantry Division. He later was assigned to the 83rd ID and was captured on the Rhine River during the Battle of the Bulge. After field interrogation he was sent to Stalag 12A. He received injuries on a forced march so was sent to a German hospital in Nuremberg shortly before the war ended. We had six in the flag line at the funeral home and cemetery to honor Mr. McClanahan. Considering the span of time between the funeral and interment services plus the "remote" location of the cemetery, it made for a long day.

However, the gratitude and kindness shown by the family made it seem not so long after all. His niece brought us Luling sausage wraps for breakfast before the funeral flag line, and the ride from Lockhart out to the cemetery ahead of the family and coach was on the sort of Texas back country motorcycle roads we all love.

Thank you to Keith Brown and Terry Ayers for hanging back and accompanying the coach from the funeral home to the cemetery.

At the cemetery the two uniformed soldiers did a fine job with the flag, and the young man (10th grader) who came all the way from Dripping Springs to sound live taps on his trumpet impressed everyone with his outstanding rendition.

RIP, JV McClanahan. You fought the good fight, finished the course, and kept the faith.
